Delbarton was done, down four goals to Don Bosco with two minutes to go in the Non-Public A state lacrosse final. But the Green Wave refused to accept the end to their season. The result was one of the most remarkable finishes in New Jersey boys' lax history. Delbarton rallied to tie the game, forcing overtime, then won 8-7 on John Shaffer's goal just 1:15 into the extra session.
The Green Wave had gone scoreless for the entire second half and trailed 7-3 when Jordan Dowiak scored with 1:48 to go. Sean Donnelly's goal a short time later gave Delbarton hope. Connor Bilby then set up Kevin Lewis for a goal with 27 seconds to play to make it a 7-6 game. After Delbarton won another draw, Bilby took it to the net himself and tied the game with 13 seconds left. After John Schisler made a save on Don Bosco's initial possession in overtime, Shaffer put away the game winner to send the Green Wave into delirium. It's Delbarton's sixth title in the seven years that the Non-Public A championship has existed, and the Green Wave's 12th overall state championship. Delbarton will be the third seed for the upcoming Tournament of Champions. For sports video highlights of this boys' lacrosse state title game, click play in the box at left. |
