Indian Hills seemingly didn't do anything easily during this remarkable softball season. So when the Braves let a 4-0 lead get away in the state Group III final against Ewing, it was just par for the course. As usual, the Braves responded, putting up another four runs to retake the lead, and this time making it stand up. The 8-5 triumph allows Indian Hills to claim the #1 ranking in the state of New Jersey as the only remaining undefeated team.
Shelby Allen was the hitting star for the Braves, with her three-run double in the fourth inning breaking the tie score. Allen also had an RBI double in Indian Hills' four-run first inning. Devin Durando had a pair of hits and drove in two runs for the Braves. In the circle, Durando was effective despite the large number of runs scored. She allowed seven hits, but most were not hit hard, and four of the five runs were unearned. Durando struck out 12 and worked her way out of several jams. Ewing did cash in on its chance in the third inning, when it turned two errors, a walk, and two hits into four runs. The highlight of the rally was Nicole Capuano's bunt single that brought in two runs. Capuano had two hits and 3 RBI for the Blue Devils. Jodie Crutchley delivered three hits and scored twice. Making its first state final appearance, Ewing finished the season 23-5. Indian Hills wraps up the year 34-0. The Braves are the first New Jersey softball team to win that many games in a season, and appear certain to be ranked #1 in New Jersey. It's their third state championship in five seasons. The state Group III final was played at Toms River East High School.
