Aman Patil played a role in all three goals as Newark Academy defeated Montclair Kimberley in the first round of the Essex County boys' soccer tournament. Patil had a goal and two assists for the Minutemen in the 3-1 triumph. With the game scoreless 10 minutes into the second half, Patil headed home a cross from Bryan Wilensky to put Newark Academy ahead. But seconds after that goal, Ryan Ruhl sent a nice through ball to Alex Cappitelli for MKA, and he shot over the keeper to even the score.
Three minutes later, Patil fought his way into the box, and when his shot was saved, chipped the rebound to Miles Park, who slotted it home to make the score 2-1. Patil also set up the third Newark Academy goal, deflecting the ball to Rory Tell who scored from close range. Before Tell's goal, MKA had appeared to tie the score a second time, when Ben Kubany made a pretty pass to Dylan Ladda in front of the goal. But the referee--apparently incorrectly--ruled Ladda offside, negating the score. Brett Luing, the keeper for the sixth-seeded Minutemen, made four saves. MKA goalie John Baney faced more action, and made several excellent stops for the 11th-seeded Cougars. MKA falls to 4-7-2. Newark Academy is now 7-4-1. The Minutemen face third seed Montclair in the tournament quarterfinals on Saturday.
