VIDEO: Seton Hall escapes with overtime goal to beat West Essex | ||

By failing to take advantage of its opportunities, the Seton Hall Prep boys' soccer team put itself in a dangerous position against West Essex. But Ryan Vazquez saved the Pirates, scoring on a header in the first overtime to give Seton Hall a 2-1 triumph. Vazquez converted a cross from Nick Kriak less than seven minutes into the extra session. It allowed the Pirates to avoid an upset defeat at the hands of the scrappy Knights, a fellow member of the Super Essex Conference's powerhouse American Division.
Seton Hall dominated the first half, and got a goal when Brian Tevlin knocked in a rebound after Mason Toye's free kick hit the post. But the Pirates missed many other golden chances to extend the lead. That came back to bite them when Adam Scheckman scored just over a minute into the second half. Cooper Steinberg had the assist on the goal, a bending shot from outside the box that just stayed under the bar. The Knights had a couple of chances to grab the lead before Seton Hall reasserted itself. With 10 minutes left, the Pirates got a penalty kick opportunity, but Toye's blast slammed into the post and caromed away, sending the game into overtime. Nick Cerrigone played a terrific game in net for West Essex, making 11 saves, but the Knights fall to 0-1-1 on the season. Liam Bertrand was credited with just two saves for Seton Hall Prep. The Pirates, ranked in the Top 5 teams in the state, are now 2-0-1.
