A series of big plays helped Montclair Kimberley Academy blow open a close football game with Morristown-Beard. The Cougars scored touchdowns from 35, 37 and 94 yards as they bounced back from their first loss to record a 34-6 victory. Ben Yanes completed only three passes in the game, but all three went for touchdowns for MKA in the second quarter. Yanes threw an eight-yard TD to Quinn Meistrich that looked more like a basketball chest pass to get the Cougars on the scoreboard.
A few minutes later, Yanes floated a ball that Dominic Romeo caught over his shoulder for a 35-yard touchdown to make it 14-0. And before the half, Carter McNeal turned a short pass into a 37-yard scoring play. MKA pretty much ended any doubt early in the third quarter when Trey Wilson broke loose on a jet sweep and took the ball 94 yards to paydirt. Wilson led all rushers with 118 yards on just three carries. Yanes added 107 yards rushing for the Cougars, and Harrison Walker totaled 44 yards and a touchdown. Morristown-Beard broke the shutout on a short run by Jack Cipriano in the fourth quarter. Cipriano was also the Crimson's leading receiver with four catches for 33 yards. Patt Coyne ran for 36 yards to lead Morristown-Beard, which was held to just over 100 yards of total offense. Nate Panza had an interception for the Crimson, who fall to 2-5. Brian Bond notched nine tackles and 1.5 sacks for MKA. The Cougars are now 6-1 and headed to the state football playoffs in Non-Public Group II. This game was played at Morristown-Beard under temporary lights. For sports video highlights of this New Jersey high school football game, click play in the box at left. |
