VIDEO: Defense leads Shabazz in bizarre win over Cedar Grove | ||
|
In one of the more bizarre high school football games you'll see, Shabazz ran its record to 6-2 on the season with a big-play defensive effort. The Bulldogs' defense scored four touchdowns while blanking Cedar Grove's offense in a 42-4 win. Shabazz scored three touchdowns on interception returns and added a fumble return for another score. Cedar Grove only averted the shutout due to a pair of safeties.
The Bulldogs' only real sustained drive of the game came on their opening possession, capped by Prince Olubakinde's touchdown pass to Elijah Outen-Muhammad. The game stayed 7-0 until late in the second quarter, when after taking over in great field position, the Bulldogs scored on a 28-yard run by Quameer Scott. On the next play from scrimmage, Outen-Muhammad picked off a pass and ran it back 29 yards for a touchdown. That was the sign of things to come, as the defense scored three more times for the Bulldogs in the third quarter. David Orduson's fumble return was followed by interception returns by Javis Hanks and Jahsim Gordon for Shabazz. Cedar Grove's points came on safeties, also in the third quarter. The first was on a blocked punt by Mike Pronesti, the other when a slew of Panthers tackled a receiver in the end zone on a screen pass. The loss ends Cedar Grove's regular season at 4-5. The Panthers will play a consolation game this coming week to conclude their season. At 6-2, Shabazz will be the third seed in the upcoming North 2, Group I state playoffs. The Bulldogs also have a big Thanksgiving weekend match-up with unbeaten Weequahic, and could see the Indians again if both advance to the sectional finals.
