The dream of a fourth straight unbeaten season is gone, but Northern Highlands can still make some history this fall. And now the Highlanders are just one win away. Northern Highlands scored early and held off Roxbury 2-0 in the Group III state semifinals. The Highlanders will aim for their fourth consecutive state championship on Saturday in the group final against Colts Neck.
Hana Kerner scored about 14 minutes into the game off a beautiful set-up from Eva Hurm. The Highlanders maintained control of the game and finally put it away in the second half when Claire Jamieson scored their second goal. Roxbury, which shared the Morris County championship this fall and was ranked in the state's Top 20, had decent possession during the game but couldn't create many chances. Paige Monaghan was the Gaels' most dangerous player, oftentimes taking on the defense on solo runs. Northern Highlands keeper Kayla Klatt made three saves to earn the shutout. Roxbury goalie Sarah Olivero made six saves. The Gaels finish the season 18-3-1. Northern Highlands is now 21-1. The Highlanders' remarkable state-record 90-game unbeaten streak came to an end early this month in the Bergen County tournament final against IHA. But with a win in the state final, Northern Highlands would become only the fourth girls' soccer team in state history to capture four straight titles.
