Down 14 points in the fourth quarter, the Wayne Hills football team faced a real test in its road game against Roxbury. Thanks in large part to the Hayek brothers, the Patriots answered the challenge with a thrilling 42-35 win. The Hayeks combined for five touchdown receptions, including all three scores in the final-period rally. Sophomore Jaaron Hayek caught the winning touchdown, a diving catch on a 38-yard pass from Brendan DeVera with under two minutes to play.
Hunter Hayek was the leading receiver for Wayne Hills, catching six passes for 110 yards and two first-half touchdowns. His twin brother Tyler had five receptions for 103 yards, and scored the two touchdowns that brought the Patriots back from a 35-21 deficit to tie the game. His name isn't Hayek, but DeVera deserves a lot of the credit for the victory as well. The senior quarterback went 17-for-32 for 301 yards and five touchdowns on the night. DeVera also played on defense, registering 10 tackles and a sack. Hunter Hayek added two interceptions for the Patriots. Luca Grave rushed for 66 yards and a touchdown. Roxbury trailed 21-7 late in the second quarter, but scored two touchdowns in 23 seconds to tie the game. The Gaels ended up scoring 28 straight points before the Wayne Hills rally. It was a balanced offensive attack for the Gaels, with Justin Werder rushing for 62 yards and a score. Tucker Voelbel had 55 yards rushing, while Michael Roumes and Donovan Brady also scored touchdowns on the ground. Brady completed 10-of-26 passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns. Roumes caught four passes, including a touchdown, and Tyshon Bradley also had a TD catch. This was the second straight tough win for state-ranked Wayne Hills (2-1) following an out-of-state loss to open the season. Roxbury slips to 1-1. This game was a divisional crossover match-up as part of the new North Jersey Super Football Conference.
