The Wayne Hills football saga has one more chapter to go. With their star players again making the big plays, the Patriots fought past West Morris in the North 1, Group IV semifinals. The 31-14 triumph moves top-seeded Wayne Hills into the finals at MetLife Stadium, for a showdown with crosstown rival Wayne Valley.
Brendan DeVera threw for 169 yards and a pair of touchdowns, etching his name in the Wayne Hills football record book. DeVera now holds the school single-season passing yardage record, and stands tied with Chris Olsen for the career mark for passing touchdowns. Hunter Hayek had a big all-around game for the Patriots. The senior caught four passes for 71 yards and a touchdown and also recorded an interception. Junior Tyler Hayek ran 59 yards for the first Wayne Hills score on a jet sweep. This game also saw senior running back Luca Grave return as a major force after an injury late in the regular season. Grave ran for 101 yards and caught two passes for 48 yards and a touchdown. Overall, Wayne Hills piled up 250 yards rushing after being limited on the ground in its first-round victory over Roxbury. Dario Sirni booted a 41-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to ice the win. For West Morris, Zach Meister had 77 yards rushing, while Cole Draghi and Ryan Finlay had touchdown runs. The Wolfpack had some success moving the ball but couldn't sustain enough drives to stay in the game. Rourke Colligan made 14 tackles for fourth-seeded West Morris, which finishes the season 9-2. Wayne Hills earned its 10th straight win to improve to 10-1. After surviving a controversy over the residency of three players that nearly knocked them out of the state playoffs, the Patriots will play in the North 1, Group IV final Sunday night at MetLife Stadium.
