The perfect season almost came to an unexpected end for the Bridgewater-Raritan boys' lacrosse team. But a goal in the third overtime by Ray Mastroianni saved the Panthers and pushed them within one win of another Tournament of Champions title. Mastroianni's man-up goal gave Bridgewater-Raritan a dramatic 8-7 win over Ridgewood in the TOC semifinal at Kean University. The top-seeded defending champions survived a late-game comeback by the Maroons to improve to 20-0 on the season.
It was Mastroianni's second goal of the night to go along with one assist. John Longordo also scored twice for the Panthers. Scott Bieda, who assisted on the game-winner, had one goal and two assists, as did Ryan Hollingsworth. Mike Serrante and Justin Higgins also had goals for Bridgewater. The winning goal spoiled a tremendous effort by Ridgewood netminder Noah Pounds, who made 14 saves. The Maroons, down 6-3 after three quarters, rallied in the fourth to twice tie the score. Jack Allard led Ridgewood with three goals and Peter Reuter scored twice. Blake Feagles and Max Luing had a goal and an assist apiece. Ridgewood, which won the Group III state title, was the fourth seed in the Tournament of Champions. The Maroons finish 14-7. Bridgewater-Raritan goalie Zach Jones made four saves. This turned out to be the only close game the Panthers would play all season. Bridgewater defeated third seed Delbarton, 11-5, in the Tournament of Champions final three days later; the Panthers finished 21-0 and won every other game they played by at least five goals.
