|VIDEO: Pompton Lakes beats Wayne Valley after big first inning|
Pompton Lakes won its first five games of the softball season entering the Dondero Classic, and wasted little time proving its talent to Wayne Valley. The Cardinals scored eight times in the opening inning en route to a 12-2 triumph.
A bases-clearing Sam Beazley triple keyed the big rally for Pompton Lakes, which also benefited from several Indians' misplays. Caroline Medino was the winning pitcher, allowing just five hits over six innings and delivering a run-scoring triple of her own.
The Cardinals are now 6-0 on the young season.
Wayne Valley, which fell to 1-5 with the loss, got a two-run single from Megan Golish in the fourth inning. Cassandra Gerard had a triple for the Indians.
The game was part of the annual Darlene Dondero Classic, held at Back Beach Park in Wanaque. The event honors the former Lakeland High School softball star and draws nearly every team from Passaic County on a yearly basis.
