The seedings suggested the field hockey state tournament game between Wayne Hills and Passaic Valley could be a close one. But in reality, the third-seeded Patriots dominated the contest, rolling to a 3-0 triumph to reach the sectional semifinals. Three different players scored for Wayne Hills, which had 23 corners in the game while allowing none to Passaic Valley. Elise VanderMay recorded a goal and an assist.
Elizabeth Byrne and Stephanie Karback also scored for the Patriots. Goalie Rachael Vellis had to make just two saves to earn the shutout. Passaic Valley goalie Selda Levine was busy throughout the contest, making 16 saves. The sixth-seeded Hornets finish their season at 8-9-1. Wayne Hills is now 16-1-1 on the year, a record that belies their third seed. The Patriots will face #2 seed Northern Highlands in the sectional semifinals, the only team to defeat Wayne Hills all season. West Morris is the top seed in the North 1, Group III section.
