|VIDEO: Morristown-Beard denied revenge, edged by Shady Side|
It was the kind of game coach Bruce Driver expected: close, well-played and even more than a little feisty. But the one thing missing for Driver and his Morristown-Beard girls' ice hockey team was revenge.
Shady Side Academy of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, defeated the Crimson 3-2 in the teams' first meeting since last year's league championship final. Shady Side won that game by the same score to snap Morristown-Beard's streak of five straight league titles.
In this game, the visiting Indians scored twice in the first period, but Morristown-Beard answered with two power play goals in the final minute of that stanza. Sophia Gallant and Jenna Kurz scored just 23 seconds apart to tie the game.
Bayley Loehrke broke the tie midway through the second period for Shady Side on a shot from the point. The Crimson struggled in the middle period but had several good chances in the third. But Morristown-Beard couldn't get anything past Gwyn Philips, the Indians' goalie who made 19 saves.
Lindsay Pych stopped 20 shots for Morristown-Beard, and Keegan Heher got credit for two assists. The Crimson drop their first game of the season; they are now 7-1 under Driver, the retired former player for the Devils and Rangers.
Alayna Trice and Olivia Coyle also scored for Shady Side. Shaila Fye had two assists. The Indians are 4-0 in the Women's Ice Hockey League of the Mid-Atlantic (WIHLMA) this season.
