The Jersey Sports Now top wrestlers for 2008-09

This list was compiled by JSN's Casey deWaal... enjoy our "deWaal-Area Team" for wrestling.

Here is a look at the JSN best wrestlers at their individual weight classes.

103-Chaz Coppa Pequannock, Fr. (32-4)- Coppa was a District 4 wrestling champion and one of the five talented freshmen in the lineup that helped coach Lenny Smith garner his 300th coaching victory.

112-Mike Polizzi Montville, So. (33-9)- Only a sophomore, Polizzi wrestled tough all year but came on strong during the individual portion of the wrestling season. Polizzi was a District 2 champion and placed 3rd in a tough Region 1 tourney. He did not place in Atlantic City but proved he can wrestle with state medalists, as he beat 2009 seventh-place finisher Kevin Churchill of Newton during dual competition.

112-Steve Godine Whippany Park, Sr. (31-3)- This multiple-time state qualifier helped lead the Wildcats to a Colonial Hills Conference title. Godine had a fine year, placing 2nd in District 9 and 2nd in Region 3.

119-Evan Lodder Pompton Lakes, Sr. (34-7)- On the same night Cardinal coach Scott Mahoney earned his 200th win of his career, Lodder became only the 2nd Cardinal wrestler to win 100 matches. (Teammate Yacob Burtamekh joined him later in the season.)  Lodder was a Passaic County champion, and finished 2nd in District 4 behind Pequannock’s Nick Esemplare but later avenged that loss in the Region 1 wrestlebacks.

125-Clint Donnelly Kinnelon, Sr. (32-3)- The school’s record holder in career wins, this three-time District 4 champion finished 4th in Region 1, just short of qualifying for the wrestling state tournament in AC.

130-Cody Phillips Montville, Sr. (32-7)- Phillips was a senior leader for the State ranked Mustangs. He was a District 2 Champion earning the Most Outstanding Wrestler award. Phillips had a strong senior campaign, along the way defeating several state qualifiers.

135-Luke Rigoglioso Wayne Valley, Sr. (35-5)- Although Rigoglioso competed at 140 pounds during the state tournament, it was at 135 during the dual season that Luke did a lot of damage for his District 4 team champion Wayne Valley Indians. Luke was a county champ, became a four-time District 4 wrestling champion and placed 2nd in Region 1.  Rigoglioso leaves the Wayne school as one of their all-time greats, and has several NCAA Division I schools interested.

135-Mike Intile Montville, So. (32-6)- Up several weight classes from his freshman season, Intile settled in and helped bolster the Montville lineup. This District 2 champion and AC qualifier with a 3rd place finish in Region 1 had a strong year. The highlight may have been in the state wrestling sectional semi-finals. Trailing Rigoglioso late in the 3rd period, Intile hit an upper body move for a takedown and near fall points as time expired, earning the thrilling victory

140-Ryan Dunphy Passaic Valley Jr. (43-2) - Our JSN Wrestler of the Year, click here to read more about Dunphy.

145-Frank Crocco Passaic Valley Jr. (38-6) - Helped by having a strong wrestling partner in Dunphy, Crocco had a very solid junior season. He was a District 13 champion and after finishing 2nd in Region 4, Crocco had a good showing in AC as he finished just one round shy of placing.

152-Taylor Pevny West Milford, Sr. (26-9) - Not a bad season for a self-proclaimed “baseball guy”. Pevny was a Passaic County finalist, a District 4 champion and just missed qualifying for Atlantic City with a 4th place finish in Region 1.

160-Shane Parcel Montville, Sr. (38-5) - Another talented wrester on coach Jon Krip’s Montville squad. Opponents were in trouble when Parcel would run his pinning arm bars. He was District 2 champion and placed 3rd in Region 1 to earn his way to Atlantic City.

171-Greg Barnish Montville, Jr. (36-8) - Barnish was one of four Mustang wrestlers who competed in AC. The junior had a very fine dual and team tourney season. The District 2 champion then used the Region 1 tournament as opportunity to avenge some earlier losses and advanced with a 3rd place finish.

189-A.J. Mott DePaul, Jr. (30-4) - Mott has been a tough wrestler since his freshman year but really had a breakthrough junior season.  Mott earned his third county title and also became a District 4 champion and Region 1 wrestling champion. He was one round shy of placing in AC, dropping a narrow 4-3 decision to Billy George of Long Branch. All of Mott’s losses were only by decision and all to eventual 2009 state medalists, two of whom were state finalists.

215-Will Weaver West Milford, Sr. (31-5) - A Passaic County and District 4 champion, Weaver just missed out on Atlantic City by placing fourth at Region 1.

215-Billy Mulligan Montville, Sr. (35-6) - Mulligan had a fine year, competing at three different weight classes during the season for Montville. Mulligan defeated Weaver during the season at 215, and won a match at heavyweight in the New Jersey Group III state finals. He dropped to 189 for the states and placed 2nd in District 2.

285-Luke Ramsey West Milford, Sr. (30-4) - Ramsey garnered his 100th victory when he won in the Passaic County wrestling finals against Emrah Akil. The two split 4 bouts during the year, each winning 2 matches against the other.

285-Emrah Akil Wayne Valley, Sr. (25-8) - Akil cemented Wayne Valley’s District 4 Team Championship with one of his own as he used under hooks and a back trip to pin Ramsey, becoming a District 4 Champ. After dropping the first two matchups to Ramsey, Akil won the last two, the last during the Region 1 tournament.
