Down to the final four:
the last remaining JSN-area teams go for titles

After nearly two weeks of state tournament action, we are down to the elite teams in baseball, softball and lacrosse.  The Jersey Sports Now area is represented by one team in each sport as state and sectional titles are on the line.  Here's a look at the surviving squads and their outlook for the upcoming games:

Boys' Lacrosse - Kinnelon:

Had anyone projected that the Colts would find themselves in this position prior to the start of the season, they would have been dismissed.  Even just a week ago, few would have picked Kinnelon to reach its first ever state Group I final.  But here the Colts are, fresh off their second upset of Mountain Lakes this season.

Kinnelon's opponent in the Group I final (at Livingston High School, Friday at 5:00) is another talented Morris County team, Chatham.  The Cougars played in the group final last year and pushed Mountain Lakes to the brink.  This season's team has been a bit inconsistent, but it should be able to give Kinnelon a real fight for the trophy.

Girls' Lacrosse - Mountain Lakes:

The Lakers cruised through the North Group I bracket and can already call themselves champions after routing Glen Ridge in the sectional final.  Now they'll try to take the state title in Saturday's final, to be played at Robbinsville High School at noon.

The opponent is Shore Regional, which survived a brutal South Group I bracket to reach this game.  This is a rematch of the 2007 final, which the Blue Devils won in a close one, 9-7.  Expect a similar type of game this time, and if Mountain Lakes can play as well as it did against Glen Ridge, the Lakers could come home with the hardware.

Softball - Pequannock:

This has been a tremendous season already for the Panthers, who have only two losses and are already champions of Morris County and the Northern Hills Conference Suburban Division.  They'll try to add a sectional title to their achievements in Friday afternoon's North 1, Group II sectional final against Indian Hills.

The Braves, as the top seed in the section, will host the game.  Indian Hills appears to have rebounded from a rough stretch at the end of the regular season, winning its two previous state tournament games in dominant fashion.  The Braves feature an intimidating pitcher in Katie Enright, but the Panthers have been the state's hottest team at the plate in the last couple of weeks.

Baseball - Pequannock:

Unlike the softball team, the Pequannock baseball squad has no titles as of yet.  Losses to Delbarton kept them from capturing either the county or league championships.  So the North 1, Group II sectional final against Jefferson has extra significance for the Panthers.

As the higher seed, Pequannock gets to host the game on Friday afternoon (thanks to a shortsighted schedule change by the state, it will be played at the same time as the softball team's sectional final).  With the Falcons and Panthers both restricted in terms of pitching (each team's ace is ineligible to throw in the final), it's a hard game to predict.  Pequannock will almost surely need to score more than it did in its 2-0 semifinal win in order to hang a banner on the gym wall.   -- Paul Mencher for Jersey Sports Now
