An All-County performer in both softball and basketball for the past two years, Bastinck was thrilled to be recognized. "It's so overwhelming," she said. "This is such an honor, it's such a great way to end my senior year."
Bastinck won't have long to bask in the glow of this achievement. She is slated to report to the Coast Guard Academy at the end of the month to begin training prior to the start of classes in the fall. Bastinck hopes to play softball and rugby at Coast Guard as well as play tuba in the Academy band.
The other two finalists for the Student-Athlete award received similar trophies. Jessica Janosz of Lakeland was an All-County honoree in both soccer and basketball. One of the state's top goalies, Janosz will attend Rutgers University in the fall where she will play soccer.
Eloisa Paredes of Clifton took part in cross-country and track and won All-County honors in all three seasons. She earned an ROTC scholarship to Seton Hall University and plans to continue running there.
This is the 36th year that the Passaic County Coaches Association has held a year-end banquet to honor the top athletes from the county. "It's just nice to recognize kids who stood out and have done well for their schools," said Pompton Lakes athletic director Colleen Moyle, the president of the PCCA. "It's just a wonderful night." -- Paul Mencher
