A rare three-sport athlete in this era of specialization, Brian Seldeen nevertheless managed to be a top player in soccer, hockey and lacrosse.  Also a top student, Seldeen was named the Passaic County Male Student-Athlete of the Year.  He received his award at the county coaches' association's annual banquet attended by more than 500 people at the Tides in North Haledon.

"It was nerve-wracking," said Seldeen of the wait for the announcement.  "To hear it was really relieving.  It's a true honor."

Seldeen's coaches said he is deserving of this award.  "He worked hard all four years to achieve his goals," said lacrosse coach Rob Tabeek.  "I'm proud of him."

"He's a great person," said soccer and hockey coach Dan Kilday. "He's got a great family, a great support system.  I'm very happy for him."

Seldeen will head to Stevens Tech in the fall where he will be a part of the Hoboken-based school's fine Division III lacrosse team.  "I can't wait," he said.  Tabeek said Seldeen's team-first attitude will be a plus on the college level.  "He'll fit well into that team," said Tabeek.

The other two finalists for the student-athlete award are also heading to play sports in college.  Lakeland's Dan Deighan will be playing football at Muhlenberg College in Pennsylvania, a top Division III program.  The speedy and talented athlete hopes to continue at quarterback.  "That's my goal," he said, "and if not, there's other positions on the field."

Will Weaver of West Milford was also a football player, but will be concentrating on wrestling at East Stroudsburg University.  "I'll be wrestling at heavyweight, as of now," said Weaver.  "I was talking to the coach and he plans to go for the Division II title right off the bat, so it's exciting."

"Our award is geared toward the outstanding athlete who is also a very good student," said Bill Vacca, chairman of the award committee for nearly three decades.  "We've had some great winners.  It's a pleasure to meet these kids and talk to them, it really is." -- Paul Mencher for Jersey Sports Now
