The final week of football regular-season play didn't change which local teams would make the state playoffs. But the results of Week 9 did impact the matchups for all seven JSN-area squads that will be heading to the post-season.
Here's a look at the situations for each team:
North Jersey Section 1, Group 3:
Thanks to a Teaneck win over Bayonne, Wayne Hills got the extra power points it needed to jump over Tenafly and into the top seed in this bracket. The Patriots know it won't be an easy run to their sixth straight sectional title, however. It starts Friday night with a matchup against eighth seed Old Tappan, which is a solid 6-2 team. In fact, every team in this bracket has a record of 6-2 or better, making it one of the strongest public sections in the entire state. Wayne Hills will need to gear up after playing soft competition for the back half of its regular-season schedule.
The other local team in this section is Lakeland, which held onto the fifth seed after Week 9 play. The Lancers have made a habit of dramatic victories in the last two years, but their lack of size may prove to be their Achilles' heel. It will take a tremendous effort for Lakeland to win on the road against fourth seed Sparta, which besides being a powerful running team also has revenge on its mind after losing to the Lancers in last year's playoffs.
North Jersey Section 1, Group 2:
As expected, Pequannock dropped further down the standings in Week 9, as two teams gained points to push the Panthers into the seventh seed. It sets up a very interesting matchup in the first round: Pequannock, in its first playoff appearance since 2002, takes on a #2 seeded West Essex team that makes the post-season just about every year. Expect a close game despite the difference in seeds and experience, and don't be shocked if the Panthers pull off the upset.
North Jersey Section 1, Group 1:
Mountain Lakes is back to defend its sectional title in this bracket off another perfect regular season. As the top seed, the Herd hosts #8 Wallington in the first round game. Last year, Mountain Lakes obliterated the competition in its first two state playoff games, and while it can't expect a total repeat of those outcomes, the Herd should not have any real trouble with the Panthers.
The other local team in this section is Butler, which dropped to the third seed despite an unexpected loss by Hasbrouck Heights. Due to the unavailability of their home field, the Bulldogs will play their opening game at Boonton High School on Saturday afternoon. Their opponent is Emerson, the team that upset Hasbrouck Heights to make it into the states. That win over the Aviators means Emerson cannot be taken lightly; however, Butler should be able to move on.
North Jersey Section 2, Group 3:
Passaic Valley missed a chance for the second seed in this section with its Week 9 loss to Paramus. The good news for the Hornets is they held onto the fourth seed and earned a first-round home matchup with #5 Somerville. Passaic Valley has been somewhat unpredictable this year, and in this wide-open bracket anything is possible. It's quite possible we could see the Hornets in the sectional final, but on the other hand, if they don't play well they could very easily lose this week.
Non-Public Group 3:
DePaul could have lost its #3 seed and even dropped far enough to face a road game in the first round of the states. But the Week 9 results kept the Spartans right where they were. That means they'll be playing at home this Friday night, but the competition will be rough. DePaul opens with Holy Spirit, which won this section a couple of years ago and is considered a threat again this year. All signs point to a first-round nail-biter, and the winner almost certainly earns a trip to play St. Joe's. -- Paul Mencher for Jersey Sports Now
