Most Jersey Sports Now-area football teams have played seven football games, meaning they only have one more game that counts for state playoff qualification. And yet very little is decided in terms of the postseason. There are several huge games this week involving local squads that will determine seeding, and in some cases, whether teams qualify or not.
Here's a look at the scenarios for Jersey Sports Now-area football teams:
North Jersey Section 1, Group III:
Wayne Hills took care of business last week and now stands 7-0. But both of its rivals for the top seed in this bracket also remain undefeated. The Patriots now face a huge showdown against archrival Ramapo. A win gives Wayne Hills no worse than the second seed in the section, and possibly the top spot. A loss and the Patriots will almost surely drop to third, meaning they'll have to go on the road in the second round and face either Ramapo or Old Tappan.
Despite a loss last week, Montville is still tied for 8th place in the standings. But the Mustangs must win this week against a state-ranked Pope John football team that has been blowing opponents away most of the season. It would be a huge upset, but if it happens, the Mustangs will make the states.
Wayne Valley will be rooting for Pope John, because that's the only result that will keep the Indians from having their own destiny in their hands. Valley is 3-4 after its remarkable escape this past weekend against Passaic. Now they face 0-7 West Milford, a football game that sounds easier than it will be. But if the Indians can win, they will--remarkably enough--most likely get in as the 8th seed.
Passaic Valley, after a worthy effort against Ramapo but ultimately a loss, has only a prayer of a chance: beat undefeated Old Tappan and get a lot of help.
North Jersey Section 1, Group II:
Lakeland continues to find ways to win. Now 7-0, the Lancers are in a three-way battle of their own for the top spot. But they face a very challenging football game this weekend against DePaul, surely their toughest game of the season to date. If they win, they'll end up first or second depending on what Lenape Valley does; a loss could drop Lakeland to third, but with help they could still get the second spot or even first.
Pequannock is another football team that will be watching the scoreboard, but first the Panthers must take care of their own business. A win over Kinnelon is a must for Pequannock to make the states. But it's no guarantee. Depending on the results of a myriad of other games, the Panthers could end up anywhere from the 5th seed to out of the playoffs. The most likely result would have them getting in as one of the lowest seeds in this section.
North Jersey Section 1, Group I:
Much remains to be determined in this bracket, and the most important game will take place this week when two JSN-area football teams square off.
Mountain Lakes will visit Butler on Friday night, and both teams come in 6-0 despite some close calls. The winner of this game will be a high seed, and quite possibly earn the #1 position with another win the following week. The loser, though, will very likely fall out of the top four and have to go on the road in the playoffs.
Hawthorne appears to have locked up a berth with its impressive win last week against Emerson. Now the Bears have another tough football game against Glen Rock. A loss would doom Hawthorne to a lower seed and a road game to start the playoffs, but a win would most likely give them a home game.
Boonton can still get to .500 with a win this weekend, but the Bombers would also need several major upsets to allow them to claim the 8th seed. Kinnelon was officially eliminated with its loss this week to Butler.
Non-Public Group III:
DePaul has an opportunity to secure a first-round home game in this very difficult bracket despite starting the season 0-2. The Spartans will need to defeat Lakeland--certainly no easy task--and get a little help, but they have a real shot at the 4th seed. The flip side is that if DePaul loses, they will drop significantly down the list, to 6th, 7th, or in a worst-case scenario, 8th, which would force them to travel to Holy Spirit in South Jersey. -- Paul Mencher for Jersey Sports Now
