Wayne Valley on top again:
Indians win county wrestling title as many schools get champions

Passaic County Wrestling tournament finals

Even though its coach didn't put a lot of emphasis on winning the Passaic County title, the Wayne Valley wrestling team went out and did just that anyway. With a solid all-around performance, the Indians cruised to their second county crown in three years, easily outdistancing the 2010 champion, Passaic Tech. Clifton took third, while upstart Hawthorne managed to tie for fourth place with Lakeland.

Passaic Tech won the most individual titles with four, but Wayne Valley secured three titles and outscored the Bulldogs by nearly fifty points thanks to its depth.

Besides those two teams, the story of the day was parity, with seven other schools recording a single champion. That list included usually strong teams like West Milford and Pompton Lakes, but also squads that don't always make a big showing at this event. Hawthorne had one champ and two runners-up, and Wayne Hills also got a wrestler to the top of the podium.

Wayne Valley's main goal is to win the upcoming District 4 tournament, also held at West Milford High School. If the Indians can wrestle the way they did at this event, they have a good shot to pull out a victory there as well. -- Paul Mencher for Jersey Sports Now
