Colts set the right tone with solid opening-day victory

Kinnelon 36
Boonton 18

Kinnelon began the 2008-2009 girls' basketball season with an impressive performance, dominating the visiting Boonton Bombers at both ends of the court.  Despite the one-day delay due to the weather, Kinnelon was able to stay focused and come out of the box with a relatively easy home victory.

The Colts' first quarter offensive output of only four points wasn’t the start they wanted.  The team seemed to be rushing shots and missed a few easy lay-ups.  After that, however, Kinnelon outscored Boonton 13-2 in the second period to take the lead and they never looked back.

In the third quarter, the Colts picked up where they left off, also outscoring Boontoon 13-2 and putting the game out of reach.  The offensive outburst was lead by Megan Hartline who had a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.  Defensively, Kinnelon used the press to create turnovers and make it difficult for Boonton to score.

Kinnelon's starters are all seniors so the expectations are high.  Coach Stephanie Finke stated that she expects her team to be a higher seed in both the county and state tournaments.  She emphasized that her team has to continue to work hard and remain focused.

Megan Hartline seems to be the go-to player on this experienced team.  She also believes this team could make some noise in the county and state tournaments.  Hartline and fellow starter Katie Burke were part of the Kinnelon soccer team that won the Morris County title.  They will utilize to use this experience to keep their teammates focused, reminding them of the essential hard work and sports dedication needed to achieve such a goal.   -- Emir Liguori
