Butler's home opener spoiled by rampaging Spartans

DePaul 42
Butler 7

DePaul’s powerful running game scored five touchdowns and proved to be too much for Butler.  The Bulldogs' delayed football home opener was spoiled as the Spartans remain perfect at 6-0.  Butler drops to 0-5 on the season.

The Spartans’ James Jurewicz scored 5 touchdowns in the game.  His first came on a 6-yard run in the first quarter to make it 7-0.  On the ensuing drive, the Bulldogs moved down the field and went for it on 4th down from the 26-yard line but the Spartans stopped the running attempt.

On its next possession, Butler drove inside the DePaul 20, but again they failed to convert on 4th down.  All the momentum switched to DePaul and Jurewicz added a two more touchdowns on 40 and 2 yard runs respectively giving DePaul a comfortable 21-0 advantage late in the second quarter.

Butler was not ready to hang them up.  A 60 yard screen pass to Kevin McFall gave them a first down at DePaul’s 18-yard line.  Peter Brand’s 14 yard touchdown pass to Michael Fitzpatrick put Butler on the board.  On their next possession DePaul’s QB was sacked and Butler recovered the fumble at midfield.  But with time winding down in the half a pass was intercepted by John Proctor of the Spartans.

As expected, DePaul began the second half running the football, becoming the Jurewicz show as he added his fourth touchdown of the evening, a 62-yard jaunt to give DePaul a 28-7 lead early in the third quarter.  Later in the quarter, Jurewicz scored his fifth touchdown capping a remarkable night for the senior running back.

DePaul also scored on a pass play to junior wide receiver Shakim Phillips to cap the scoring.  The Spartans will now face a big showdown with Delbarton next Friday at home, a game that could end up deciding if they make the playoffs this fall sports season.
