The Lakeland girls’ soccer team defeated Pequannock 6-1 to stay perfect for the season. Senior captain Kylie Vuksanic scored twice to lead a balanced effort by the Lancers.

Vuksanic opened the scoring on a penalty shot. Late in the first half, she added her second goal on a rebound in the box to give Lakeland a 2-0 lead going into the locker room.
Despite the score, Pequannock played tough defensively. The Panthers managed to stand up to Lakeland’s pressure in the first 20 minutes of the contest. Clearly, Lakeland dominated the first half, but Pequannock created a few chances of its own developing from breakaways, corner kicks and a free kick.
In the second half, Lakeland’s relentless attack proved to be too strong. The Lancers added four more goals to increase their winning streak to 10 in a row. Nonetheless, Pequannock never stopped working and kept pushing forward. Their perseverance and determination earned them a well-deserved goal with a few minutes left in the game.
The scoreboard had no ill effect on Pequannock as they continued to fight hard for every loose ball. As a team, they played a solid game showing many positives to build from. “We’ve had a few tough losses but we’re starting to click,” said Pequannock’s head coach, Sean Palen.
The Lancers are reaping the benefits of hard work and team chemistry. “We are best of friends and we do a lot of other things together besides soccer,” noted Vuksanic.
Unbeaten Lakeland is determined to have a strong showing in both the county and New Jersey state tournaments. Coach Paul Wood said, “We’d like to be in the Passaic County Tournament finals, and we’d like to win a couple of games in the state tournament and see where that takes us.” -- Emir Liguori for Jersey Sports Now
