On a wet and windy day in Caldwell, the Lakeland Lancers defeated the Caldwell Chiefs 42-21 to remain undefeated after seven football games. The forty-two points are the most Lakeland has scored all season, despite the miserable conditions for athletes and high school sports fans alike.

Caldwell came out strong and drove right down the field helped by two fifteen yard penalties to go ahead 7-0. But after that, it was all Lakeland.
Lakeland’s offense led by quarterback Dan Deighan was unstoppable. Whether Deighan was throwing for a forty yard bomb to for a score or scampering for yardage he was a major force, as he has been all football season. Deighan capped the first-half scoring when he took a quarterback draw 58 yards to the end zone, making it 28-7 Lancers.
Lakeland’s defense led by Jake McDonald, Ray Capo and Kevin Gormley did a great job shutting down Caldwell offense for three quarters. Lakeland took advantage of their overwhelming size advantage on offense and defense.
Lakeland next week has a showdown with DePaul. A win in that contest will give the Lancers the conference title outright, and also improve their position for the New Jersey state playoffs. But DePaul will be a desperate football team after this week’s big loss to Delbarton. The game is set for Friday night at Lakeland. --Rob Donohue for Jersey Sports Now
