Despite a postponement, the weather was still a factor in Montville on Saturday night. A slippery football led to a number of key turnovers in the Mustangs' 21-13 loss to West Orange High School. The defense fought hard and kept it a close game for most of the night, but in the end it just wasn't enough to contain the explosive West Orange offense.

After playing conservative football and keeping it close all game, Montville coach Gerry Gallagher made a huge gamble in the fourth quarter. Fighting against the clock, Montville went for a fourth-and-ten near midfield and converted to create the play of the game. Anthony Callendrello leaped up and made a great grab before breaking a tackle and high-stepping into the end zone. The ensuing extra point was missed, though, leaving the Mustangs behind, 14-13.
West Orange responded with a touchdown drive, capped on a 40-yard scoring pass from Anthony Casalino to Mitchell Montlouis.
Montville had the football on the final drive with a chance to tie it up. With limited time remaining, they were forced to pass the ball leading to a game-clinching interception by the Mountaineers.
In the end, a few long touchdowns were the sports kryptonite to a hard fought defensive effort. After keeping the score close and fighting hard until the end, Gallagher was pleased with his team's play.
