Young Lakers eliminated by defending champion Kinnelon

Kinnelon 7
Mountain Lakes 2

Kinnelon may have lost many of the players from last year's state ice hockey championship squad to graduation, but the Colts are on track for a return to the Public B final.  Kinnelon pulled away from Mountain Lakes in the second period and rolled to a fairly easy quarterfinal victory at Mennen Arena.

The top-seeded Colts got a balanced offensive effort in the victory, with its second and third lines contributing some solid play.  After #9 seed Mountain Lakes tied the game 1-1 in the first period, Kinnelon really took charge, and built a 6-2 lead by the end of the second.

Kinnelon moves on to the semifinals where it will face fifth seed Verona/Glen Ridge.  As for Mountain Lakes, the defeat ends its hockey season at 13-10-1.  But it was a season of improvement for a very young Lakers team, which nearly earned its way back into the Mennen Division.  Mountain Lakes finished just two points out of first place in the Halvorsen Division.  The Lakers won two state games in overtime, experience that should help next year as they hope to move on to bigger things. -- Jersey Sports Now
