Herd strikes early en route to 20th straight win

Mountain Lakes 36
Boonton 6

The Mountain Lakes football team continues to impress after defeating the Boonton Bombers and increasing their winning streak to 20 games.  The Herd took control of the contest against their neighboring North Jersey sports rivals early and never looked back.

The Herd capitalized on early mistakes by the Bombers.  The second of two high snaps was recovered in the end zone by Mountain Lakes for its first touchdown.  On a broken play the Herd converted the a 2 point conversion to take an 8-0 lead.  A short punt gave Lakes excellent position and its second TD came on Kevin Ryan’s run.  Soon after, Ryan’s second TD run gave the Herd a 22-0 advantage to start the second quarter.

The Bombers showed a never-quit attitude and a good kickoff return set up a short field for the offense.  Unfortunately, the Herd defense didn’t want any of that and forced Boonton to punt the football.  Mountain Lakes quarterback Scott McWilliams made a long run on the Herd's next possession, setting up his own TD run and giving the Lakers a comfortable 29-0 lead at the half.

The Bombers intercepted a McWilliams pass to start the third quarter, giving them slim hopes of a sports comeback.  Andrew Regan ran for 38 yards and later scored to make it a 29-6 game.  The Bombers caught the Herd off guard on an onside kick, taking over in Mountain Lakes territory.  However, after reaching the two-yard line, the Boonton drive was halted on a 4th-and-goal by the Herd, dissolving any chance of a comeback.

Two plays later, Ryan’s 95-yard touchdown sprint iced the game.

This 20-game winning streak might be at risk next week when Mountain Lakes collides with an unbeaten Butler team.  “We are not thinking about the streak, we just want to come out and play hard,” said McWilliams.  Whether they are or aren’t thinking about the streak, the Herd will surely face their biggest challenge of the New Jersey high school football season so far on Saturday. -- Emir Liguori for Jersey Sports Now
