No one expected Pequannock to make it to the Group II boys' basketball New Jersey state final at the Rutgers Athletic Center. Their opponent, Newark powerhouse Shabazz, was the favorite entering the tournament but barely avoided several upset bids along the way. In this final, though, the Panthers couldn't summon up one last bit of sports magic.

The taller and more athletic Bulldogs dominated the boards and pulled away, especially in the second half, when the Panthers seemed to finally run out of steam. Still, the loss can't take away from the remarkable run the underdog Pequannock team made just to reach this game--truly one of the most remarkable stories of the entire New Jersey high school sports year.
