In a hard-nosed football game with its offense struggling, West Milford turned to its other units to make something happen. The result: a 14-0 shutout victory at home over Passaic Tech in a Northern Hills Conference sports contest.

With the game scoreless in the second quarter, the Highlanders’ special teams came through. Kyle Donnelly blocked a field goal attempt by Passaic Tech and John Pierce ran it 87 yards for a touchdown.
The defense, not to be outdone, ran back an interception a short time later to the PCT 19 yard line to set up the second touchdown for the Highlanders. Senior quarterback Brian Mizerek connected on a short scoring pass with wide receiver Anthony Segro. The Highlanders converted on a two-point conversion after missing the extra point on the first touchdown.
Defensively the Highlanders had a strong showing with 4 interceptions. Passaic Tech was on the move with a solid running attack during the first quarter. However, their second possession of the football game ended on a fumble and they struggled after that.
A scoreless second half gave West Milford their second shutout of the year. A 40-yard run by Brian Mizerek late in the fourth quarter put the Highlanders at PCT’s one-yard line and iced the game. When asked about the cohesiveness of the team, Mizerek said that hard work in practice along with team chemistry is translating into wins.
The Highlanders have won three consecutive games and they seem to have a great chance to reach the New Jersey state football playoffs. However, Coach Sean Poppe won’t allow the team to think that far ahead. “We won’t look past any team, and we won’t think about the post season until after our 8th game,” he said.
