Highlanders' "Cinderella" run ends in county semifinals

Wayne Valley 2
West Milford 0

Wayne Valley played host to the final four of the Passaic County girls' soccer tournament.  In the first match, Wayne Valley played West Milford in a one sided match that send the Indians to their fourth county tournament finals with a chance for their third straight title.

From the first whistle, Wayne Valley immediately began to impose their game and pressure West Milford.  The Indians superior ball movement and cohesiveness set the tone early.  West Milford tried to hold off the relentless Wayne Valley’s attack.  However, it was only a matter of time and in the 26th minute Natalie Oprihory scored on a shot across the box.  The remainder of the first half went scoreless with Wayne Valley controlling the play throughout.

Nothing changed in the second half.  Wayne Valley picked up where they left off playing on West Milford’s half of the soccer field the entire game.  Wayne Valley was able to convert on a well designed corner kick play as Senior captain Susan Hayes riffled a shot pass the West Milford’s goalie.  That goal effectively put the game away as West Milford couldn’t create any legitimate scoring chances.

West Milford had a great run in the county tournament.  As the ninth seed, they upset Hawthorne and the number one seed Clifton Mustangs.   This was definitely the Cinderella sports story of the year in girls' soccer.  Unfortunately for West Milford midnight came sooner than later.

Wayne Valley as the fifth seed finds itself in the county final again.  The Indians will have their chance against Lakeland High School on October 25th with the hopes to retain the title they shared with Clifton last year. -- Emir Liguori for Jersey Sports Now
