The Highlanders’ 34-0 rout of Millburn nearly assured them a spot in the playoffs. West Milford was able to establish the run early and took advantage of a weak opposing front line. The offense looked sharp with a well balanced game plan and, defensively the Highlanders had 4 takeaways to complete the shutout.

Senior quarterback Brian Mizerek had a superb game connecting on 2 touchdown passes. The first TD throw was a 33 yarder to Logan Pevny and later he hooked up on a 20 yarder with Anthony Segro. Mizerek added to his TD count by running one in for a score.
Defensively West Milford had a sound effort with 4 interceptions. Millburn could never get the running game working and when they put in the air the Highlanders shut them down. Even when Millburn had a short field to work with after a fumbled punt, West Milford was able to push them back.
It appears West Milford football is back where it wants to be. After a few seasons without a playoff appearance, the Highlanders are ready to show they are a team on the rise. Coach Shawn Poppe is not concern about who their first-round opponent will be. “We will prepare for whichever team we end up playing,” he said.
However, the Highlanders have not quite locked up a playoff spot. At the moment, West Milford is in the #6 position in North Jersey, Section 1, Group III. But three teams could pass them with wins next week, and if all three win, the Highlanders will be out. However, the odds are in their favor. Ramapo is likely to win its game, but both Paramus and Fair Lawn face difficult opponents.
Next Friday night West Milford will have a tough match up against unbeaten Lakeland as they honor their senior class in their regular-season finale. --Emir Liguori
