Highlanders blanked in rainy season opener at Passaic Valley

Passaic Valley 26
West Milford 0

The Passaic Valley Hornets played an all around game, beating West Milford and giving coach Al Cappello his first win a the helm.  Despite a new system, the team seemed well-prepared as the offense put up 26 points led by Matt Coiro’s three touchdown passes.  The defense was not to be outdone as they held the Highlanders scoreless with quick, aggressive play.

In the first quarter, Matt Coiro hocked up with Mike Governali for 3 yard TD pass after a fumble recovery at the Highlanders’ 27 yard line gave Passaic Valley good field position.  It stayed 7-0 until Governali picked off a pass attempt deep in Highlander territory with 29 seconds in the half.  Soon after, Coiro's second TD pass, this one to Anthony DeSanti, gave the Hornets a 14-0 lead at the half.

The Highlanders could not get any offensive momentum in the first half and looked a bit sloppy in a game played in soggy conditions.

In the third quarter, the Hornets' defense came up big once again, recovering an errant lateral by the Highlanders.  Two plays later the Coiro-Governali connection struck again and the Hornets led 20-0 after a missed extra point.   The Hornets swarming defense came up with 2 sack on the Highlanders' next offensive possession, forcing them to punt.

In the 4th quarter, the Highlanders had an interception, bringing the ball to the Hornets 32 yard line.  But, once again the defense forced a turnover on downs, preserving the shutout. Running back Dominick Coiro, who shares the same name and backfield as the quarterback but is not related, keyed the final Passaic Valley scoring drive and recorded the touchdown to make the final 26-0.

Matt Coiro first start as the QB was superb on all levels.  Coiro said “I didn’t think I was going to be as nervous as I was when the game started.”  Coiro also commented that the team is adapting well to Cappello’s system but said there is more work ahead.

The Hornets have a bye next week and they’ll face the Kearny Cardinals in two weeks. For West Milford, things don't get any easier, as they must travel to powerhouse Wayne Hills on Thursday night. -- Emir Liguori
