Down two goals to Christian Brothers Academy with under 10 minutes to play, Delbarton stormed back with three goals to win the Non-Public state championship game, 3-2. Alex Hagerty scored twice to key the Green Wave's comeback. It's the fifth consecutive state title for Delbarton, which completes the season unbeaten in New Jersey and 29-1 overall. CBA, which was badly beaten twice during the regular season by Delbarton, came out strong in this game. The Colts were able to match the Green Wave's pace and create chances on the counterattack. After a scoreless first period, CBA struck twice in the middle stanza to take a shocking 2-0 lead over the Green Wave. The Colts maintained that advantage until they took a penalty several minutes into the third period. Given a power-play chance, the Green Wave converted as Hagerty scored from directly in front of the crease with 9:17 to play. Still, Delbarton trailed and its streak appeared in jeopardy. Goalie Colton Phinney came up with a key save for Delbarton with around four minutes to play, and just moments later the Green Wave got the goal it needed. At the end of a crisp sequence of passes, John Baiocco fed Hagerty in front, and the junior one-timed it under the CBA goalie to bring the score level at 2-2. That goal seemed to take the life out of the Colts, and it took less than two minutes for Delbarton to deliver the final blow. Junior Josh Melnick was able to control the puck in front of the Colts' net, and despite being off-balance, flipped it past the goalie for the game-winner. Delbarton kept the pressure on for the final seconds, not even allowing CBA to get an extra skater on the ice. It was a rare close call for the Green Wave: in 22 games against New Jersey foes this year, only once had they not won by at least three goals. Delbarton hasn't lost to a Garden State opponent since February of 2010.
