In an early-season matchup of Top 20 field hockey squads, the difference came down to execution on corners, a few big saves, and a couple of crucial whistles. Oak Knoll, ranked #2 in New Jersey, defeated Montclair Kimberley 3-0. Allison Sayia scored twice and two Royals goalies combined for the shutout, but that doesn't tell the whole story on this game that was closer than the score indicates.
MKA had more chances in the first half, but Colleen Conway made several nice saves for Oak Knoll. The Cougars also had a goal waved off when the official ruled it had hit a player's foot before being directed into the cage. Sayia scored twice off corners before and after halftime to give Oak Knoll the lead. An apparent goal by MKA to cut the advantage in half was first ruled good by the umpires, then later disallowed. A goal by Caroline Andretta with about five minutes left iced the win for the Royals. Katie Morris then made a great stop on a penalty stroke in the final minute to preserve the shutout. Oak Knoll is now 2-0 on the season, while MKA is 2-1. For sports video highlights of this high school field hockey game, click play in the box at left. |
