The Montclair field hockey team made some waves on Saturday with its upset win over New Jersey's second-ranked team. With a late goal by Jessie Kent-Cutillo and strong play in goal by Julie Schreiber, the Mounties stunned Oak Knoll, 1-0. It was the first loss for the Royals since the end of the 2011 season. Last year, Oak Knoll went undefeated en route to the Group I state title.
Montclair had more offensive pressure during the game, although Oak Knoll was more dangerous in transition. The Mounties had a great chance to go ahead midway through the second half on a penalty stroke, but Colleen Conway made a big save for the Royals. The breakthrough came with just over eight minutes to play off a corner, when Rachel Mann set up Kent-Cutillo at the side of the cage. Montclair withstood the late Oak Knoll pressure to complete the upset. The Mounties are now 4-1 on the season while Oak Knoll falls to 3-1.
