A strong, cold wind couldn't blow David Brearley High School off its course toward a Group I state championship. And a tough break helped end a great season for the Park Ridge Owls. With four second-half goals, Brearley defeated Park Ridge 5-0 in the Group I semifinals, played at Indian Hills High School. Federico de Oliviera had three goals and an assist for the Bears.
Playing into the wind in the first half, Brearley still managed to reach the break with a lead, as de Oliviera knocked in a rebound of a Phillip Costa shot. That goal came just moments after starting Owls' goalie Joey Pigot was knocked out of the game after a head-to-head collision with a Brearley player. When the teams traded sides for the second half, the howling wind helped the Bears put the game away. de Oliviera scored twice in less than two minutes to make it 3-0. Elijah Allen and Jake Santos completed the scoring in the final 10 minutes of the game. Kevin Filipe had eight saves for Brearley, which improves to 19-2. The Bears (19-2) are in the state final for the first time since 1990, when they were co-champions, the only boys' soccer state title in school history. Brearley will meet New Egypt for this year's crown. Pigot made two saves for Park Ridge before being forced to leave the game. Backup Jason Galitsis had four stops. The Owls finish the season 17-7.
