DePaul won its first-round girls' soccer state tournament game against visiting Mother Seton, but it wasn't easy despite the 3-0 final score. Now it gets a whole lot harder for the Spartans. Hunter Crespo set up the first goal, then scored twice in the late going to put the game away for DePaul. Gianna Rizzo had the initial score for the Spartans, while Alyssa Oviedo and Kiyomi Kishimoto recorded assists.
While DePaul had the better of play, Mother Seton did create a few good scoring opportunities. Shannon Marmo made one save and Alli Hennion had two stops to combine for the shutout. Setters' goalie Shannan McCarthy had a handful of tough saves that helped keep her team in the game until the end. Mother Seton, based in Clark, finishes its season at 6-12-1. DePaul is now 7-9-1. Next up, the Spartans play the top team in New Jersey--and perhaps the entire nation--when they visit Immaculate Heart Academy on Friday. IHA has already beaten DePaul twice this season and recently dethroned Northern Highlands, the previous #1 team, in the Bergen County tournament final.
