There will be a new section champion this year in North Non-Public B boys' soccer. Top seed Oratory Prep held on for a soggy 2-1 win over defending champ Montclair Kimberley in the sectional quarterfinals. The Rams dominated much of the contest, taking a 2-0 lead at the half but missing several other opportunities to expand their advantage. MKA made it an interesting final few minutes after scoring on a penalty kick late in the contest, but could not create a tying goal.
Freshman A.J. Kopacz opened the scoring with a great solo effort. Later in the first half, Kristian Grimm converted a corner kick by James Gagliano to double the lead. The Rams continued to create opportunities, but were denied multiple times by MKA goalie John Baney, who has played well all year for the Cougars. The visitors finally started to build a little offense, and suddenly got back in the game when awarded a penalty kick with under eight minutes to go. Danny Nasti converted from the spot for the Cougars. In the final minutes, though, MKA could not seriously threaten the Oratory net again. Rams' keeper Sebastien Ramirez was credited with just one save on the day. Montclair Kimberley, the eighth seed, finishes its season at 5-14-1. Oratory Prep is now 15-4-1 and will host the sectional semifinals next week.
