Frustrated and unable to score in the first half of their season opener, the Oak Knoll field hockey team broke loose after halftime. The Royals scored five times in the second half to win a match-up of Top 10 teams against Madison, 5-0. Gabby Andretta notched two goals and one assist to lead Oak Knoll. Andretta set up freshman Bridget Murphy for the goal to break the scoreless deadlock, then added the next two scores.
Murphy ended up with a goal and an assist, as did Ali McCarthy for the Royals. Bella Brosie also scored and Elizabeth Denehy had an assist. Oak Knoll goalie Jordan McGinley made five saves. Madison goaltender Nicole Ducey stood tall while under severe pressure throughout the game. The sophomore stopped 14 shots in her varsity debut. The game was the 2016 season opener for both squads. These teams met in the semifinals of the Tournament of Champions last fall, with Oak Knoll pulling out a thrilling 4-3 overtime win.
