In a Morris County tournament where the higher seeds have dominated, Kinnelon bucked the trend. The fifth-seeded Colts went on the road and beat #4 seed Mount Olive, 14-9, to reach the semifinals. Kinnelon took charge of this boys' lacrosse game early, rolling out to a 10-4 lead by halftime. Kobi Frankel had four goals and three assists to lead the Colts.
Brian Gnad scored three time and added a pair of assists for Kinnelon, while Mike Maniero and Robert Lewis scored twice apiece. Gregg Budd added a goal and three assists, and netminder John Calia had eight saves. Mount Olive entered the game with the gaudy 13-1 record and state ranking, but Kinnelon was not intimidated. The Colts have played a much tougher schedule than the Marauders, and that experience served them well. Kinnelon also had the advantage of recent success in the Morris County tournament, having won the event in 2010. Now the Colts will look to return to the finals. Their next opponent will be top seed Chatham, which advanced with a 14-4 win over West Morris. Scott Kepler, Cory Heidaran and Cristof Strunc each tallied three goals in a balanced offensive attack. The Cougars have never won the Morris County title, an event dominated by Delbarton and Mountain Lakes. But this year, those teams will not meet in the final. Instead, the Green Wave and Lakers are set for a semifinal clash. Mountain Lakes, the third seed, took care of a tough Montville squad in the quarterfinals, winning 11-6. Dylan Muti and Rob Orazietti each recorded hat tricks, while Jon Broome and Christian Cuccinello added two goals apiece. Delbarton knocked off Morristown in the other quarterfinal, 15-6. The semifinals take place Saturday, beginning at noon at Madison High School. The final is set for next Tuesday evening at FDU-Florham. |
