Perhaps, given some time and perspective, Morristown-Beard's hockey players will appreciate what they accomplished. But in the immediate aftermath of the Crimson's 4-4 tie in the state Non-Public finals with Christian Brothers Academy, the only feelings were frustration and disappointment. Morristown-Beard and CBA were declared co-champions, the first time in 25 years in an ice hockey state final. For the Crimson, it's their first state championship in school history.
The draw was an anticlimactic end to an exciting, action-packed game. Morristown-Beard scored four times in seven minutes of the first period to jump out to a 4-1 lead at the Prudential Center in Newark. But CBA had its own flurry, three goals in two minutes in the second period to tie the game. The rest of the contest turned into a more close-to-the-vest battle, but both goalies had to come up with a number of clutch saves. Danny Porth of Morristown-Beard shook off his tough stretch to end the game with 35 saves. Connor Silverstein, who took over in net for the Colts after Mo-Beard's fourth goal, stopped 20 shots without allowing a puck past him. Michael Meisenbacher, Coleman Schultz, Thomas Rago and Luke Moser had the goals for the fourth-seeded Crimson. Morristown-Beard, which shocked top seed Delbarton in the semifinals, ends the season 20-5-3 and is in consideration for the #1 ranking in New Jersey. CBA, the third seed, got goals from Cristian Winters, Anthony Cusanelli, Bobby Hampton and Derek Contessa. The Colts finish 20-4-4.
