The first-round boys' basketball state tournament matchup between rivals Wayne Valley and West Milford was as hotly-contested as you might expect. The two teams split their regular-season meetings, but the Highlanders had home-court advantage due to a better overall record. But the Indians managed to hold the lead for much of the game, until West Milford rallied late.
The contest came down to the final possession, when Jay Mustafa stepped up with buzzer-beating heroics for Wayne Valley. The Indians pulled out the remarkable 46-44 win to advance to the sectional quarterfinals. Tom Larranaga led Wayne Valley with 18 points, while Andrew Herasimtchuk added 15. The Indians are now 14-12 and face Demarest in the next round. Connor Healy had 17 points for West Milford. Tyler Coyle added 11 for the Highlanders, who finish their season at 19-8.
