Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference athletes captured five gold medals at the NJSIAA track and field Meet of Champions. The event took place Monday in Old Bridge after being rained out last week. Keturah Orji of Mount Olive was the biggest winner among local athletes. The sophomore captured double gold, winning both the girls'' long jump and the girls'' triple jump. Orji set a personal best in the triple jump by surpassing 41 feet.
Two other girls also took home golds. Elizabeth Lansing of Randolph, just a freshman, surprised the field when she won the 1600-meter race. Lansing posted a time of 4:51.05 and won by more than two seconds. Sophomore Mackenzie Barry of Mendham held off the field to win the 3200 meters in a time of 10:18.24. Barry said she drew inspiration from her friend Lansing''s victory earlier in the day. The sole male NJAC athlete to come home with gold was javelin thrower Stephen Burk of Parsippany. Burk posted a distance of 205 feet, 3 inches to easily capture the Meet of Champions title. The Morris Hills boys, who won the Group II state title, earned three medals at the MOC, including second place in the 4x100 relay. Mountain Lakes, the Group I state champion, brought home two medals, including a silver medal for Stephen Lewandoski in the 1600 meters.
