VIDEO: Overpeck Madness -- Bergen Catholic stuns St. Edward | ||
|
Two weeks ago, this scene would have seemed impossible. Bergen Catholic looked like a team headed for another lost season, while St. Edward of Ohio was dismantling another of New Jersey's top football squads. But on this Saturday night at Overpeck Park in Palisades Park, Bergen Catholic would celebrate a huge upset win over the visitors from the Cleveland area. A late touchdown drive produced a dramatic 14-10 triumph for the Crusaders against the nationally-ranked Eagles.
Jarrett Guarantano tossed the winning pass to Mike Aniello with just 26 seconds to play. Guarantano completed 18-of-24 passes for 182 yards and the score, and also rushed for 64 yards and the other BC touchdown. St. Edward took a 10-7 lead midway through the second quarter on Cole Gest's 39-yard touchdown run. The Eagles had a great chance to extend that lead, but a key goal-line stand by Bergen Catholic kept the game close. The Crusaders' defense also stymied St. Ed's throughout the second half to give themselves a chance to make the dramatic comeback. After its lopsided loss to St. Peter's Prep two weeks ago, Bergen Catholic has defeated two strong out-of-state opponents to improve to 3-1. The Crusaders face Paramus Catholic as Big North United Division play opens next week. St. Edward was ranked #1 in the nation by some polls after crushing St. Joseph of Montvale 42-0 two weeks ago. But the Eagles have now suffered back-to-back upset losses, first to Ohio rival Elder, and then this shocker in New Jersey.
