Down a goal with 11 minutes to play in the Passaic County girls' soccer quarterfinals, Wayne Valley came from behind to earn an exciting 3-2 win over crosstown rival DePaul. Imani Thompson scored the tying and winning goals as the Indians pulled out the victory. Thompson tapped in a loose ball after a cross from Randi Smith to even the score. Four minutes later, Jen Cannarella sent in a cross from the right wing and Thompson headed it over the goalkeeper for the game-winner.
After neither team scored for most of the first half, DePaul struck for two goals in two minutes. Gianna Rizzo and Nina Lombardo both got behind the Wayne Valley defense, with assists going to Victoria Carnevale and Alyssa Oviedo. But the Indians struck back before halftime, with Smith converting after racing past the Spartans' defense. Brianna DeLuccia had four saves for fourth-seeded Wayne Valley. Alli Hennion and Rilee Keenan combined to make five stops for DePaul, the fifth seed, which falls to 4-5-1. Wayne Valley, now 7-4, will meet top seed Wayne Hills in the semifinals this coming weekend.
