After a difficult season facing the biggest and best soccer teams in Essex County, the Glen Ridge boys hoped to make a run in the state tournament against similar-sized schools. But in a tight first-round game at New Providence, a late goal by the Pioneers sunk the Ridgers, 2-1. Sean Regan scored the game-winner with four minutes to play and had both goals for eighth-seeded New Providence. Pioneers goalie Mike Zamora made eight saves, mostly in the second half when Glen Ridge outplayed the host team.
The ninth-seeded Ridgers started slowly, and saw New Providence take the lead on Regan's goal after a giveaway. Goalkeeper Nathaniel Johns made a couple of big stops to prevent the deficit from growing larger; Johns had five saves overall. In the second half, Glen Ridge took control of the contest and created several good chances, finally breaking through on Clark Baratta's goal off a feed from Brenner Bodell. The Ridgers couldn't take the lead, however, and New Providence made them pay in the end. Glen Ridge finishes its season at 3-18. The Ridgers got the #9 seed despite their record because of the quality of competition they faced all season. New Providence advances to face top seed David Brearley in the next round.
