VIDEO: DePaul handles the conditions to top Ridgefield Park
Written by - Wednesday, October 5 2016

For a team used to playing on turf, DePaul faced quite a different kind of field in its road girls' soccer team at Ridgefield Park. The Spartans handled the conditions, scoring a goal in each half to pull out a 2-0 triumph.

Hunter Crespo and Victoria Carnevale notched the goals for DePaul. Gianna Rizzo got credit for assists on both scores, and Rilee Keenan made five saves to earn the shutout.

The game took place at Ridgefield Park's Hobart Street Field, a grass facility with bumps and swales throughout the pitch. The field also had many bare spots and has a dirt baseball infield that cuts through much of one end of the field.

Nonetheless, DePaul dominated play and would have won by a greater margin if not for the effort of Ridgefield Park goalie Cassandra Varelas, who made numerous saves. The Scarlets' best scoring chances came on a pair of free kicks by Trisha Tellian, which both required leaping saves by Keenan.

The Spartans broke the scoreless tie when Crespo tapped home a cross by Rizzo late in the first half. After missing on a number of second-half chances, DePaul put the game away on Carnevale's perfectly-placed long-range shot.

DePaul is now 6-1-2 on the season, while Ridgefield Park falls to 2-7.
