It was exactly the kind of match you would expect with two teams fighting to keep their seasons alive. Belleville and Wayne Valley battled down to the very end in their sectional quarterfinal game before the Buccaneers came away with the upset victory. Sixth-seeded Belleville will return to the North sectional semifinals after its dramatic 18-25, 25-19, 26-24 road win. The Buccaneers will make an even longer trip next week to face #2 seed Vernon.
P.J. Gencarelli led Belleville with 16 kills and had 10 digs. Marlon Rodriguez recorded 14 kills and 15 digs, while Stafon Kellam had nine kills and three blocks. Belleville's success may rank as a surprise after losing many of the key players from last year's talented squad. This year's team is dominated by sophomores with only a couple of seniors in the regular rotation. The Buccaneers are now 17-7. Wayne Valley, the third seed in the North section, finished its season with a 20-7 record. The Indians also won their third Passaic County title in the past four years.
