So far this decade, Fair Lawn has taken on all comers in boys' volleyball in North Jersey. And when it comes to state tournament time, the Cutters have always managed to bring their best. For the sixth consecutive season, Fair Lawn won the North Jersey Section 1 championship. In front of a large and boisterous home crowd, the Cutters defeated Belleville in two tough games, winning 25-21 and 25-23.
The top seed in the bracket, Fair Lawn jumped out ahead in the first game and preserved its lead throughout. Belleville made a bit of a run late in the game to make the score closer. The second game was a battle, with Belleville leading early, and keeping pace with Fair Lawn throughout. The Bucs cut the lead to a single point at 24-23, but a kill by Max Kostin sealed the win for the Cutters. Ryan Healy led Fair Lawn with 10 kills. Dennis Abramov filled the scoresheet with three kills, three blocks, three aces and seven digs, while Kostin added four kills. Michael Erushalimski notched 10 assists and two kills, and Tyler Pollock recorded three kills and two blocks. Belleville's star P.J. Gencarelli came up with 17 kills to lead all players. Marlon Rodriguez had seven kills and two aces, while Ammar Rahim notched 21 assists and 10 digs. The Bucs, the second seed in the section, finish their season at 27-3. Fair Lawn, which won the state title in 2011 and 2012, has fallen in the semifinal round each of the last two years. The Cutters (38-4) face #1 Bridgewater-Raritan in this year's semifinal, but Fair Lawn comes in with confidence, knowing it defeated the Panthers earlier in the season.
